Ms. Anderson has been given the OK to go inside the building (at least parts A and B) without a hard hat and an escort. Yesterday, the Dedication Planning Committe was able to walk down to the Media Center and look at the amazing mural created for the main wall. Betty Sitz, a local artist, has pictured Roberts Elementary School on "Book Character Day." All the students getting off the bus are dressed as book characters. How many of them can you name?? If you can't recognize them, you need to go to the children's section of your local library and bone up on the "classics"!

Can someone living in Pulaski County School District request a transfer to Roberts?

According to the current Majority to Minority Transfer Policy a transfer to Roberts Elementary will not be possible at this time. Only non-black students residing in the PCSSD school district may apply for M-to-M transfers to LRSD and only LRSD schools which have a student population that is over 51% black are able to accept M-to-M transfers. At this time Roberts elementary student population is 22% black, therefore, it does not meet the guidelines.

Roberts PTA establishes nominating and bylaws committees

At the planning meeting for the Roberts PTA, two committee were established as the first steps in forming a new PTA.

The Nominating Committee is in place to find parents interested in serving on the PTA at Roberts Elementary. If you have a child attending the school next year and are interested in serving on the PTA, please email Nicole Lashbrook at RNLashbrook@sbcglobal.net with your name, contact information, and where your interests lie. The committee will pool all interested parties and make recommendations for board positions. Please submit all information before May 28th.

The Bylaws Committee will work on establishing bylaws for the new Roberts PTA.

What is the projected enrollment for the school? How many P4 slots were assigned?

P4 letters are being mailed out Friday, April 23rd. Currently there are 60 students assigned to P4 at Roberts Elementary for 60 seats. All assigned students reside within the Roberts attendance zone.

Currently there are 632 students assigned for the 2010-11 school year, however, this number changes daily.

After the registration period ends, will the number of preK registrants be shared?

P4 students will not be processed until after all K-12 students have been assigned. Assignment letters for P4 students will be mailed out on April 23, 2010.

All P4 students will be assigned by:

1. Attendance zone students who live in the attendance zone and have siblings attending.
2. Attendance zone students
3. Students who have siblings attending but do not live in the zone.
4. Students who do not live in the zone.

The time and date stamp for P4 students is being done this year for proper record keeping. Any student who turns in their P4 application during the Open Enrollment - January 25th - February 5th will be considered for a seat in their school of choice.

At time we are waiting to see what the potential enrollment for Roberts will be. Therefore, it is impossible to say at this date the exact number of classes at each grade level we will have.

Can someone living in the Fulbright zone request a transfer to Roberts?

Any student who currently resides in the Fulbright attendance zone may apply for Roberts Elementary through a TNT (Transfer No Transportation) transfer. All TNT transfers are based on space availability. We will not be reviewing TNT requests until July so that we will be certain all students who reside in the zone have been assigned. You may complete the TNT transfer request at the SRO office beginning January 25 - February 5

Meet the Principal night a big success

Tuesday night families joined Barbara Anderson and LRSD administrators for a Meet the Principal night and PTA fundraiser at Izzy's Restaurant. Thanks to the great turnout of over 60 families, Izzy's will donate nearly $400 to help get things started.

Board names Roberts Elementary Principal

The Little Rock School District Board of Directors approved the appointment of a principal for the new elementary school, Roberts Elementary, opening this fall. Barbara Anderson, currently principal at Bale Elementary, was selected to lead the first new elementary school in the Little Rock School District in over 30 years. Anderson has been with the Little Rock School District since 1991. She has been the principal at Bale Elementary since 1993 and was an Assistant Principal at Romine Elementary the two years prior. Anderson has her master’s degree in Educational Administration from the University of Arkansas and her Bachelor of Science degree from Henderson State University.

Will we be able to go to Fulbright to register our children for the pre-K class at Don Roberts?

There will be a representative for Roberts Elementary at Fulbright and Terry beginning January 25th - January 29th from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Parents who live in the Roberts attendance zone will be able to process registration paperwork at these sites during the dates listed above.

Parents may also come to the Student Registration Office at 501 Sherman between the hours of 8:00 - 5:00 - January 25th - February 5th.

When will the boundaries for the new school be publicized?

The boundaries for the new school were approved by the LRSD board members in October. The new boundaries were shared in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. They have also been posted to the LRSD website and the Terry and Fulbright school pages since that time.

Can the younger siblings entering Kindergarten grandfather too?

For example: an older sibling grandfathers to Fulbright but has a younger sibling entering Kindergarten. Can the younger sibling grandfather too?

Siblings entering kindergarten can apply for a Transfer with no Transportation (TNT) to the older sibling's school. TNT transfer applications must be made January 25 - February 5, 2010 in the Student Registration Office. Transfers will be granted if space is available in July after zoned students are placed.

Can we change to the new school in August if we are zoned for it?

Students who are zoned for Roberts Elementary who choose to grandfather to their old school and then want to change their choice in August prior to school beginning will be allowed to transfer provided spaces are still available.

If students decide to transfer to the new school after the school year has begun, transfers will be made at the end of the first semester.

When and how do families elect to attend the new school or stay at their current school?

All students will be assigned for the 2010-2011 school year based on the current address on file. School assignments will be made to the correct school based on the new zones for the students address.

Parents who elect for their students to stay at their current school or “grandfather” to the same school (Terry, Fulbright) for the 2010-2011 school year MUST complete a “Grandfathering Request Form” during the open enrollment period – January 25, 2010 – February 5, 2010 at their current school or the Student Registration Office.

When will parents and children be able to tour the new school?

The new school is expected to be completed in August 2010. During the month of August, the district will plan several open houses/grand opening celebrations at the new building. An open house prior to the first day of school will allow students to meet with the principal, staff, and tour the new school. Other openings will be scheduled to include the community and media.

Parents and community members are welcome to attend either meeting.

Will current Terry/Fulbright students be allowed to attend or grandfather into their current schools for the 2010-2011 school year?

Yes. Students who are attending Terry or Fulbright this year as K-4th grade students will be allowed the option to continue at the same school until they complete 5th grade. The student must maintain residence at the same address of record for the 2009-2010 school year. Students who leave the district and return later will be assigned to their school based on the new address guidelines.
